I am a farmer. It is in my blood and soul. I just can't help it.

It is such a big part of me. It is spiritual and practical.

I am also a healer. It is in my blood and soul. I just can't help it.

For me the two go together.

I am an artist. It is in my blood and soul. I just can't help it.

It feeds everything else that I am.

Once upon a time there was a little girl who usurped her friend's sandbox to plant a packet of flower seeds. She would not allow her friend to play in said sandbox, because she wanted the flowers to grow. And some of them did and they bloomed. That year the friend's father optained permission to create a little garden in the yard of the aluminum factory where he worked for the two friends. Marlies and I created our little oasis. We had a little patch of lawn in the middle and tiny flower beds all around the perimeter. Her father helped us with the things that required a grown-ups help. He built a little picket fence to surround our garden. We spent many sunny and not so sunny days in that little garden.
All my life I have created gardens wherever I lived. In New York City it was an empty lot at the base of our apartment building, in upstate New York I had all of my grandmother's farm land to garden with my grandmother and the rest of the family. I was also introduced to dairy farming and loved it. When I went to college in Buffalo I tried to grow a few plants in pots in the window of my room. Numerous bits of bare or overgrown ground in San Francisco were transformed into little gardens by yours truly. In San Leandro, California, the truly mediteranean climate allowed me to grow a substancial amount of our food on a rather small lot.
Then we moved to Santa Rosa and I ended up adding farm animals to the mix. The chickens added a whole new dimension and I was beginning to feel more in my element. I always wanted to be a farmer, when I grew up. And now that I am living on just under one acre of land with my partner, I am getting to live the life of an old time farmer or pioneer. I get to combine history, farming and good nutrition all at once. My love of learning, experimenting, art, making it myself, willingness to take risks, independence and the outdoors are all coming together to make our little farm work.
